Why You’ll Love These Sweet Potato Recipes
It’s time to ditch the overly sweet marshmallow-topped sweet potato casserole for something new! From appetizers, side dishes, soups, and main dishes, you’ll find something for everyone in my collection of sweet potato recipes. We like them in all sorts of preparations, from plain and simple baked and topped with a little butter to more elegant dishes like melt-in-your-mouth sweet potatoes dusted with homemade pumpkin pie spice and topped with maple-glazed pecans.
Sweet potatoes are an incredibly versatile ingredient. You can play up their sweet side and turn them into muffins or puddings (try a sweet potato pie rather than the usual pumpkin pie this holiday season!), or add cheese, BBQ flavors, meat, beans, or spices. I love serving creamy sweet potato walnut hummus before a holiday meal, with goat cheese and sweet potato gratin served along with the celebratory roast turkey. There are so many ways to make sweet potatoes, and I hope you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for in my recipe list further down!
How Do You Cook Them?
When you’re ready to make sweet potatoes, first check my post on How to Make Baked Sweet Potatoes 5 Ways which will give you some tips for how to cook this beautiful vegetable in the oven, air fryer, and more. As a quick overview, here are some of the ways you can prepare sweet potatoes:
- Steam – To make sweet potatoes using this easy method, boil a pot of water, then place whole sweet potatoes in a steamer basket. Place the basket over the water and steam the potatoes for 25-30 minutes until tender.
- Grill – Similar to potatoes, sweet potatoes grill well. You can peel them or leave them unpeeled, then cut them into wedges or thin slices. Grill the sweet potatoes on a clean, oiled grill, turning every few minutes until cooked through.
- Roast – To bake or roast a whole sweet potato, preheat your oven to 400°F. Prick the potato with a fork so it will release steam as it’s cooking, then roast in the oven for 45 minutes to 1 hour. You can also peel and slice the sweet potato and place it on a baking sheet. Add olive oil and salt and roast for about 40 minutes, until tender.
- Fry – To fry sweet potatoes, peel and dice them, then fry in oil, stirring, for about 10 minutes, until soft.
- Boil – If you want to make mashed sweet potatoes this method is for you! Peel and roughly chop sweet potatoes and place them in a pot. Cover the potatoes by 1 inch of water, then bring the water to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook the potatoes until tender. Drain the sweet potatoes and proceed with your recipe.
- In Baked Items – While you may never have added sweet potatoes to a sweets recipe, they do very well in cakes and muffins. You can also try substituting sweet potatoes in recipes that call for pumpkin puree for a slightly different flavor. You can either boil or roast sweet potatoes and puree them in a blender or food processor until smooth. Then add them to a pumpkin recipe instead of pumpkin.
What Do Sweet Potatoes Pair Well With?
The question should be: What don’t sweet potatoes pair well with? I love serving mashed or baked sweet potatoes with meat dish mains, and they are so nice sprinkled with a salty goat cheese or Parmesan for a flavor contrast. Explore my Thanksgiving and Christmas recipe collections, or browse my entire Holidays section for more ideas of what to serve with sweet potatoes.
In terms of other ingredient pairings, try sweet potatoes with apples for a sweet-tart fall flavor contrast. Add a little feta cheese to a plate of oven-baked sweet potato fries, or drizzle them with tahini sauce and a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime juice. Maple syrup is a classic addition to whipped sweet potatoes, which would also be nice with a bit of cayenne pepper stirred into to save them from being too sweet. Salted butter is always welcome, or try your favorite non-dairy butter. And, I always love a big dollop of sour cream or plain Greek yogurt on top of a baked sweet potato.
